Thraets is a non-profit Pro-Democracy Tech research lab committed to combating digital threats to truth, democracy, and social unity. In the Global South, democratic processes face a toxic combination of deliberate disinformation, unintentional misinformation, social divisions, and rising polarization. With rapid technological advancements, challenges such as deepfakes and cheap fakes are becoming increasingly complex to address.
Our work focuses on societal challenges tied to democratic stability, human rights, and the ethical development of technology in developing nations. We investigate how emerging digital threats—including synthetic media, surveillance tools, and coordinated or gendered disinformation campaigns—can undermine free and fair elections, fuel hate speech and ethnic tensions, and erode public trust in institutions. Through technical research, policy advocacy, and multi-stakeholder engagement, we strive to anticipate and mitigate these threats before they are weaponized to destabilize nations.
We also explore ways to harness technology to protect citizens and societies across the Global South.
